Wines Worth Exploring: Friulano from Italy

Wines Worth Exploring is a series where I highlight lesser-known wines from around the world. Whether you’re already curious about unique varietals or just starting to explore beyond the classics, these wines offer something new to discover. This time, let’s take a closer look at Friulano, a white wine from Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia region.

Discovering Friulano

Friulano is grown in the same northeastern region of Italy as high-quality Pinot Grigio, but in much smaller quantities. While less common, it’s well worth seeking out. “Friulano” is the name of someone or something from Friuli, which makes sense since this grape is rarely grown elsewhere. The wine offers freshness, subtle complexity, and a delicate profile—perfect for those looking to explore something a little different.

  • A Regional Classic

Friulano is deeply rooted in Friuli’s wine culture. Formerly known as Tocai Friulano until European regulations required the name change, it’s been grown here for centuries. The region’s hillside vineyards, influenced by the Adriatic Sea and the Alps, create the ideal conditions for crisp, aromatic whites.

In the glass, Friulano is typically dry and light to medium-bodied, with notes of ripe pear, green apple, white flowers, and herbs. A subtle almond bitterness on the finish is also common.

  • A Great Example: Livio Felluga

When exploring any varietal, it helps to start with a producer who truly understands the grape. Livio Felluga is just that. A pioneer in elevating Friuli’s international reputation, the winery has been crafting thoughtful, expressive wines for generations.

Their Friulano, which is hand-picked and gently destemmed, shows just how layered this wine can be. Fresh and floral upfront, with textured citrus fruit, mineral, and that signature almond note lingering through the finish. It’s a well-structured wine that is immediately pleasing.

  • Why You Should Try Friulano

Friulano is approachable, food-friendly, and simply delicious. It’s a wine you’ll want to return to once you’ve tasted it. Whether you’re diving deeper into Italian whites or looking for something new to share at your next dinner, Friulano is a worthy addition to your list.

Pair it With...

Often served as an aperitif, Friulano works well with prosciutto and other cured meats. Consider serving it with grilled vegetables or summer salads. And when you're struggling to find a wine that can stand up to tricky ingredients like artichokes or asparagus, Friulano delivers.
